Highlife artiste Kofi Nti curses DJs

A number of highlife musicians have decried what they describe as a ‘deliberate attempt’ by some radio presenters and disc jockeys (DJs) to sideline the genre but the outrage has taken a twist as Kofi Nti has hurled curses at presenters, abrantepa.com can state.

Kofi Nti, who has been doing highlife for years, in an interview with KMJ on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz, Wednesday, alleged that some radio presenters have vowed to “kill” highlife music, a reason they have given attention to foreign tunes to the detriment of the local genre.

An angry Kofi Nti further alleged that some DJs demand money (payola) before giving their records airplay, adding that some even refuse to honour their part of the deal after taking the money.

“I am amazed that after recording a song, I give it to a DJ only for him to blatantly tell me that if I don’t give him money, he will never play. Aren’t you ashamed!” he fumed with rage.

The ‘Rakia’ hit maker could not fathom why some DJs promote songs by Nigerian artistes for free, yet expect their palms to be greased by Ghanaian musicians.

“I have never recorded a bad song before so why? You don’t want to listen to highlife again? I have paid a lot of money to many DJs but I won’t mention their names. Flava doesn’t sing better than me. You want to kill highlife music… God will punish you” he fumed again.
